I’m Lizette, nutrition and fitness lover, certified personal trainer and chronic DIYer.
I’ve applied an “I can do anything” mentality to everything in my life since childhood. From teaching myself how to swim and about Chinese medicine, to making my wedding dress and moving to Japan. Of course, it was no different when it came to getting myself into shape and achieving a positive body image and a healthy, happy, balanced lifestyle.
I don’t consider myself a unique case though. I sincerely believe that, if I was able to do this all on my own, anybody can do it! So I’ve decided to put this website together to share my experiences in hopes that something will click or resonate with you and help you on your way to the new, upgraded YOU! This is not a place for a quick fix. It’s a place where you can find information and support while making a life-long change. Once you’re done with this, you won’t need a quick fix!
A bit about me
I went from being confident but overweight in college to being slim and toned but with low self-esteem living in Los Angeles. I’ve been chunky and lazy and super lean and athletic and everything in between. All the while learning who I am and how to achieve balance and the best state of body and mind for myself.
Besides earning a degree in psychology while running and designing studies in a health lab, I’ve also done plenty of research in nutrition and physical training. I have trained and modified my lifestyle based on hours of research, conversations with professionals, books, articles, classes and more. Always learning more, and weeding out the effective from the downright detrimental and eventually getting certified as a personal trainer.
Through all my lifestyle changes, there was one that happened slowly in the background, and it was the most important one of all. I changed the way I think about myself, others and how they see me, my appearance, health and the whole world around me. It wasn’t easy and it took a lot of falling and picking myself back up, as well as a wide range of life experiences to reach this point. A positive outlook and self-awareness are necessary in achieving personal health and fitness goals as well as a satisfying self-image. Awareness will also improve your relationships with others, while understanding your perception of what the media feeds us and how it affects us.

Goals of DIY Mind & Body Upgrade
I started DIYMBU to share my experiences and found knowledge in hopes that it will help and inspire other women (and men!) to achieve their health, fitness and lifestyle goals.
It took many years of trial and error to learn the combination of foods, exercises and mentality which have led me to have a body and live a lifestyle that I am happy with and proud of. Luckily, hindsight is 20/20 and I can now see, and share with you, which changes I think should have come first and how to make the transition more easily!
The main goals DIYMBU strives to achieve are:
- Empowering you to boost your own self-esteem, believe in yourself and realize your innate potential and true beauty.
- Defying unrealistic, extreme and restricting ideals of beauty and health.
- Showing you that it takes time and you get what you put in when it comes to health and fitness, but everybody can achieve their goals and the results last forever.
- Most importantly, making you remember this: Don’t base your self-worth on what others think of you.
DIYMBU focuses on finding a balance between, mental and physical health and fitness which will then manifest itself in the form of a physical appearance that you will be happy with and proud of. Here you will find psychological approaches to break habits and negative mentalities and a simplified healthy lifestyle that makes it as easy as possible to understand and follow. I believe that with these tools, anyone can achieve their fitness and health goals!
